Last Wednesday I got a question from a listener (Suzy) on
one of my radio appearances who asked how to make her kids'
lunches healthier.
Ah! One of my favorite topics. I have a nine year-old
son, so that question is close to home for me.
Here are the 3 simple suggestions I had for Suzy:
#1: Don't let them buy lunch at school! 99% of school
lunches contain processed foods and are poorly combined.
It's no wonder that most kids are either out of control
from the sugar and chemicals in the processed food, sleepy
from bad food combinations, or get stomach aches regularly
All those problems comes from the food they eat.
And how can they be expected to sit still, concentrate and
get good grades if they feel lousy?
#2: Say no in the grocery store. I know they'll beg for
the Fruit Roll-ups, Fritos and Snack Pack puddings (or
other processed creations), but say no.
Many parents give in to their kids' begging for these non-
foods to "make them happy and keep them quiet." But being
a parent isn't a popularity contest--For your kids to have
good healthy, you need to make it a commitment.
Thing is, we get our eating habits from our parents. So
if you want your children to grow up to be happy, healthy
adults who aren't plagued with disease, pain and early
death, good eating habits have to start NOW--with you as
the example.
#3: Make their lunches at home--the Great Taste No Pain
way. There are nearly 100 recipes and sandwich suggestions
that make yummy lunchbox fillers while feeding your kids
bodies (and minds) with real, nutritious foods that keep
them awake, feeling great and ready to learn.

Today my son brought a thermos full of homemade soup, some
sesame crackers and rice milk for his lunch. Did he LOVE
it! And he came home from school full of energy, ready to
do his homework and then play a game with Daddy.
To your health,
Sherry
PS: The soup I mentioned above is found on page 59 of the
Great Taste No Pain recipe book. It's a big hit with kids
(and adults)!
