I'll have Salmonella please

Hello my friend:

I just saw a CNN clip that said 23 people in 14 states got
salmonella poisoning from cereal.

The culprit was Malt-o-Meal brand puffed rice and puffed
wheat.  They're also sold under the private-label names
Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel,
Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw's, ShopRite, Tops and Weis
Quality.

There was a similar incident last month where salmonella
was found in Aunt Jemima pancake mix.

I'm not surprised.

It's just more evidence of the fact that processed food is
garbage and dangerous to your health.

When what you eat regularly comes from a box, bag or can,
you aren't eating food--you're filling your body with stuff
that is nutrition-less "stuff" designed to last forever on
your pantry shelf and made to taste good using chemical
potions by guys in white labcoats.

"Bubble, bubble toil and trouble."

And the safety of that "food" is determined by how
bacteria-free and regularly inspected the factory is that
makes it, as well as the safety of the chemicals that it's
made of.

Your body was meant to eat real food--not chemicals.  You
simply cannot enjoy good health (great health is out of the
question) if a large percentage of your food is processed.
Next time you're tempted to buy something in a box, bag or
can, read the ingredients--I guarantee you won't even know
what half or more of them are.

Tell me, have you had your dose today of corn syrup
solids, partially hydrogenated coconut and palm kernel oil,
hydrogenated soybeans, sodium caseinate, dipotassium
phosphate, mono- and di-glycerides, sodium aluminosilicate
and artificial flavor?

If you put powdered creamer in your coffee or tea, you did!

Please, do yourself and your family the biggest gift of
all.  Spend your time and money in the grocery store around
the outer perimeter--where the fresh fruits, vegetables,
meats and fish are.

If you must get something in a box or can, keep it to a
minimum and buy organic brands whenever possible.

I know processed foods can be attractive, especially for a
family on a budget.  And the generous coupons that the food
giants put in Sunday's newspaper make them seem oh so
affordable.

But remember this:  Even if you save $2.00 or more on a
double box of Hamburger Helper, you are making yourself and
your family sick and overweight.  And that costs you
thousands of dollars in doctor's bills, drugs and larger
clothes each year.

I know some people will still argue that fresh food costs
more.  That's sometimes true, especially if you buy
organic.  However, here are a few ways to slash the cost of
fresh food way down:

1.  Buy on sale.  Most grocery stores have produce, meat
and fish specials each week.  Plan your meals around what's
on sale.

2.  Buy in bulk.  Stores typically offer bulk packages of
things like chicken breasts, steaks or fish at a lower per
pound price.  Freeze what you don't need right away.

3.  Support your local farmers.  Most areas have regional
farmer's markets where you can buy fresh produce at a
fraction of the cost charged by a grocery store.

Also, most states have Community Supported Agriculture
programs where you buy a share of produce up front and get
your weekly basket of each week's picks.  My family and I
do this.  We pay $600 for a 20-week share--that's a mere
$30 a week for enough fresh organic produce to feed 6
people!

In addition to being great for your body, real food is far
less likely to make you sick.  Just be sure to completely
cook your meats and thoroughly wash your produce with a
drop of mild soap (dish soap is fine) and water and rinse
well.

To your health,

Sherry
