While I was at the hairdresser's yesterday morning, I
started thumbing through a popular magazine in the waiting
area.
One of the featured articles was "How to avoid tummy
trouble over the holidays."
Of course I was intrigued and flipped right to that page.
The article discussed some major causes of holiday stomach
distress and what to do about them.
After reading the article, I thought to myself that the
paper the article was printed on would make good bird cage
liner because that's about all they're worth.
I was shocked to see how misleading and completely wrong
the "experts" who wrote it were, and more importantly, what
the useless suggested "remedies" were.
Here are some excerpts from what I read, along with my
comments:
===================================
Holiday tummy trouble #1: Heartburn
Cause: Eating too many rich foods or peppermint
Suggested Remedies: Pepto Bismol, Maalox, Tums, Rolaids,
Pepcid or Tagamet
===================================
SB: What!? Rich foods and peppermint cause heartburn?
That's like saying wine causes alcoholism.
What causes heartburn is overproduction of acid in the
stomach.
And there are just two things that cause that--eating too
many acid-creating foods and eating foods that don't digest
well together.
Acid-creating foods are extremely difficult for the
stomach to digest, and poorly combined foods halt digestion
altogether.
In either scenario, the stomach desperately tries to do
its job and has to keep secreting acid over and over.
All that acid has to go somewhere...and that somewhere is
usually UP. Voila--you get heartburn.
Plus their recommendation of antacids is like telling
someone to dump kerosene on a fire.
Because the LAST thing your stomach needs is to have its
digestive enzymes neutralized! That would cause the
stomach to produce even MORE acid to try and get digestion
going again.
The real remedy: Eat alkaline forming foods, and properly
combine all of your meals like I teach in Great Taste No
Pain.
- http://www.greattastenopain.com/great.asp
Do that and your stomach secretes just the right amount of
digestive acids for easy digestion.
No excess acid = no heartburn.
======================================
Holiday tummy trouble #2: Constipation
Cause: Being constantly on the go; having guests in the
house
Suggested remedy: Laxatives
======================================
SB: Unbelievable. I don't know of many adults that are so
busy that they don't notice when nature calls.
Plus if you're so screwed up that you won't use the toilet
when you have guests in your house, you'd better get them a
hotel room next time...or get a good air freshener.
The single most significant cause of constipation is
poorly digested food, NOT having guests.
When your foods are not digested as they should be (due to
the overproduction of acid in the stomach I mentioned
above), they don't pass through the colon very easily either.
That means feces that are dry, hard and get stuck. (Can
you say aaaargggh?!)
Using laxatives is only a temporary fix.
Plus long-term use of laxatives causes damage the colon
and makes it dependent on them to work properly or at all.
Nice, huh?
==============================================
Holiday tummy trouble #3: Ulcers, stomach pain, gastritis
Cause: Taking too many NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs)
Suggested remedy: Switch to acetaminophen instead
==============================================
SB: That's so typical...forget the cause of the pain (they
don't even know the cause!)--let's just put a band-aid on
it.
And if one band-aid doesn't work, try another.
And try to ignore the fact that these band-aid drugs have
side effects a mile long and cause a ton of untold damage
throughout the body.
Remember, a significant cause of body, joint and muscle
aches and pains is inflammation.
And inflammation is the result of acidosis.
The manual "Foods That Create Acid, Foods That Take It
Away" shows you exactly which foods are acidic and which
are alkaline so you know what you can eat lots of and what
to avoid.
Plus, the guide "How To End Stomach Pain Forever, Even If
Your MD Says, 'No Way!'" teaches you how and why specific
food combinations keep your stomach (and body) acid low.

Low acid = less inflammation = less need for NSAIDS

PS: Jane felt better in just one day:

Sherry:
I'm writing to let you know how great I feel.
I have suffered from arthritis since my late 20's (2 total
hip replacements and a shoulder acromyplasty).
All those drugs for pain and inflammation took a toll on
my poor stomach. My GP prescribed omeprazole to help with
my symptoms. It seemed to work great for several years
until I discovered they too had awful side effects
elsewhere in my poor body.
At 53 I was feeling a wreck and found your site by sheer
luck. I tried your plan and I felt better in 1 day.
Unbelievable!
I have not taken the omeprazole since. My other nasty
symptoms are subsiding too.
The recipes in GTNP are fantastic and easy. All I can say
is "THANK YOU" Sherry from the bottom of my heart for
giving me the best advice ever.
