Although it may not be current news as often as acid
reflux or GERD, hiatal hernia is a common condition that
causes agony for many.
Researchers estimate that by age 60, up to 60% (6 out of
10) of people have it to some degree.
For those who don't know what a hiatal hernia is, a very
brief anatomy lesson:
There's a wall of muscle in your abdomen (your diaphragm)
that looks like an open umbrella above your stomach.
The diaphragm has a little hole in it and that's where
your esophagus (food tube) connects to your stomach.
When you have a hiatal hernia, the top part of your
stomach pushes up through the little hole in your diaphragm
and bulges out.
It looks kind of like a water balloon. And just like a
balloon, if you squeeze it near one of the ends, you'll get
a little bulge sticking out. That's what a hiatal hernia
looks like.
Anatomy lesson over.
Hiatal hernia can be caused by many things--hard coughing,
pregnancy, severe vomiting, lifting heavy objects and
overeating.
Now, when your stomach bulges out like that, it creates a
"swinging door" for food and stomach acid to go sliding up
into your esophagus from your stomach.
And you get pain and a 4-alarm fire in your chest,
especially when trying to sleep at night. Many people just
call this "heartburn."
Although the traditional medical treatment for hiatal
hernia is antacids, H2 blockers or PPI's, they actually
make the problem worse.
These medications either neutralize or block the digestive
enzymes in your stomach, which halts digestion. Your
stomach, sensing something's wrong, secretes more acid
trying to start digestion up again.
But then the acid is either neutralized or blocked again.
So the stomach tries AGAIN to get digestion going...
This is a cycle that can go on for 8-10 hours or more.
And the end result is a stomach full of poorly broken down
food and excess acid (which begins to rot) that can easily
glide through the "sliding door" of your hiatal hernia and
wake you up at night.
The answer that REALLY works to get rid of symptoms of
hiatal hernia is to eat in a way that allows for easy
digestion of your food with no excess acid production.

Sherry:
You are correct in the fact that by now I am pain free of
digestive issues.
My problem started 32 years ago. I was told I have a
hiatal hernia which let my food back up into my throat,
especially at night. The doctor said no spicy or greasy
foods.
Ten years ago I was put on Protonix which helped somewhat
at times or so I thought. Then six years ago it was
switched to the so call miracle purple pill. I could not
say that either really helped--I think the days I did not
have any problems was by luck when I unknowingly had a
correctly combined meal.
Four months ago I had spot in my throat that felt like it
had been burnt. The doctor did a scope and confirmed it
was from the acid which comes up nightly. He said I now
need to take the Nexium morning and evening and not eat
within 4 hours of bed time. I also needed to raise the
head of my bed 5 inches.
He also mentioned they can do surgery to fix the hernia,
but my thought is what good will it do if I don't fix the
acid. I am intelligent enough to know if the Nexium didn't
help earlier in the day that it was not likely to help at
night, and I needed to figure out what I could do to stop
it.
That is when I found your website and read about food
combinations. I ordered your books.
Since the night of my very first day I have not had acid
reflux at night and have not experienced it since, as long
as I eat properly.
Funny thing is I have also not had chocolate or Pepsi and
amazingly enough have not craved them. I always limited
them anyway but would get craving before. After following
this program for 2 weeks the spot in my throat no longer
hurts.
I still do take the pill in the morning only until I have
a scope done on my stomach the first part of July to check
the years of damage. Supposedly it can heal existing
damage. With luck it will not be serious and I will then
stop taking it all together. I do not believe it was ever
meant to be taken for such a long period of time.
I would like to thank you for your uncomplicated and easy
to follow plan.
