There's a strange phenomenon that can occur where
someone's immune system goes awol. When it happens, the
immune system mistakes normal digestive tract bacteria for
dangerous invaders and launches a brutal attack.
As a result, serious inflammation occurs and sores develop
in the lining of the colon (large intestine). The
inflammation causes explosive, frequent diarrhea and the
sores bleed and produce pus.
I've just decribed ulcerative colitis (UC).
UC is a chronic condition that typically involves flare-
ups of symptoms followed by periods of remission.
And boy does it takes its toll on your quality of life.
UC sufferers have to miss more time from work than the
average person. They limit their relationships or social
activities because of the embarrassment. Plus they need to
know where the bathroom is in every place they go, because
an explosive attack can come out of nowhere.
Because of this, many people with UC are understandably
depressed. Not only that, but their confused immune system
produces chemicals that act on the parts of their brain
that affect their mood and make it even worse.
The standard treatment options for UC are depressing in
themselves, and include:
1) Anti-inflammatory drugs
These typically include steroids, which can bring about
relief from the colon inflammation, but at a HUGE price.
Steroids cause Cushing's syndrome--where you retain water,
gain weight, get round and puffy, and develop acne. Plus
other side effects of steroids include muscle weakness,
fragile bones, high blood sugar, fatigue and mood swings.
2) Antibiotics
Antibiotics help relieve UC because they kill off the
bacteria that the immune system is attacking. But other
drugs are still needed for the inflammation, plus the
bacteria grow back after antibiotic therapy is stopped and
the "attacks" start all over again.
3) Antidepressants
Ah, yes. Another excuse to hand out SSRI's.
Unfortunately they do NOTHING to address the reason someone
with UC is depressed in the first place. And they come
with their own list of dangerous side effects which include:
- Nausea
- Insomnia
- Anxiety; restlessness
- Decreased sex drive
- Dizziness
- Weight gain or loss
- Tremors
- Sweating
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea (Great news for UC sufferers, right?)
- Constipation
- Headaches
They can also lead to:
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts
- Worsening depression
- Aggression and anger
- Acting on dangerous impulses
- Extreme hyperactivity
- Tardive dyskinesia (Remember that from yesterday's
email? If not, click here to see what it looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUr8ltXh1Pc )
4) Surgery
Or when in doubt, cut it out. As many as 4 out of 10
people with UC eventually have some or their entire colon
removed. Many end up with a colostomy (a hole in their
abdomen to which a bag is attached to catch feces that leak
out).
It's easy to see how people with UC can feel hopeless.
But there is a fantastic new development in the treatment
of UC that involves safe, natural measures--not dangerous
drugs or cutting out your insides.
It's probiotics.
Several studies show that a combination of these specific
probiotic bacteria can successfully treat colitis and serve
as maintenance therapy for patients in remission:
* Lactobacillus casei
* Lactobacillus plantarum
* Lactobacillus acidophilus
* Lactobacillus bulgaricus
* Bifidobacteria longum
* Bifidobacteria breve
* Bifidobacteria infantis
* Streptococcus thermophilus
When creating the formula for Super Shield, we poured over
the research and selected the strains of bacteria that
would provide the most relief for the greatest variety of
health challenges.
And ulcerative colitis was one condition that we knew we
had to help people with.
Plus we selected the top-notch, most heavily researched
species of each bacteria in Super Shield--so we could be
assured of its potency and ability to provide dramatic
improvement in the health of everyone taking it.
If you or someone you love suffers from the horrors of UC
(or other digestive condition), there is hope for you.
PS: Mildred saw a difference in Super Shield's formula
over another probitic for her UC:

Sherry:
I had a colonoscopy done in 1999 because of a rectal
bleeding & was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I was
not given any medication at that time.
However when frequent stomach cramping persisted, I
consulted my internist who recommended a particular
probiotic. I began taking it and seemed to have only bouts
of the original complaints...but they still persisted.
After receiving my order of Super Shield (which I ordered
for the entire family including my 95 y/o mother who
suffers from Crohn's), I noticed ALL cramps have ceased. I
feel this could be due to the inclusion of the varied
essential bacteria that were not included in my original
probiotic.
I intend to stay with Super Shield since I have not had
relief like this (thank God) in a very long time.
