I'm often ask about
the best thing to do to stay healthy and pain-free,
and prevent sickness and disease.
Before I answer, I
usually ask the person asking, what they ARE doing so far.
Here
are some common responses:
"I
exercise 3-4 times a week."
"I've cut back on sweets and don't drink to excess."
"I quit smoking."
"I limit my intake of bad fats."
"I've sworn off junk food!"
"I make sure to get a good night's sleep."
"I get a physical every year."
"I've cut way down on soda and coffee."
All great ideas!
But the first thing
you want to do when you're sick...and the first thing you want
to take care of to keep from getting sick is...
...your gut.
Here's why:
The gallant gut
Your gastrointestinal
tract (nicknamed the gut) is truly the Grand Central Station of
your entire body (and thus your health) from head to toe.
To get a better idea
of why it has such a profound effect on ALL of you, here are
some fun facts about that stretch of you that goes from Ur-mouth
to Uranus:
* If spread flat,
your intestines would cover the entire area of a tennis court.
* About 70% of your
immune system is located in your gut. So the next time you catch
a cold, your gut is likely to blame.
* You have 10 times
as many microbes (bacteria) in your body as you have cells in
your body.
* You have 100 times
more DNA in your microbes than in your body's cells.
* You have about 4
pounds of friendly bacteria in your digestive system that help
make vitamins, protect you against infection and assist in
digestion.
* Your gut even has
its own "brain"--called the enteric nervous system. That means
that if your vagus nerve (the nerve that connects the gut and
the brain) was ever cut, your digestive system would continue to
function on its own without instructions from your brain!
* Your gut
manufactures FAR more neurotransmitters (like serotonin--your
body's natural anti-depressant) than your brain. As a matter of
fact, 80-90% of your body's serotonin is made in your gut.
So if you think poor
gut health can't affect you mentally, think again!
Poor gut health
= poor all over health
Your gut has a
two-sided job which in many cases helps decide whether you are
breathing with your heart beating today or whether you're
deep-sixed.
First of all, it has
to scrutinize every single atom of every single substance you
ingest and decide whether it's friend or foe.
If the friendly
bacteria that line your intestinal walls detect that you've
ingested harmful toxins, viruses, carcinogens, bacteria or
pathogens, they latch onto the invader, engulf it and escort it
out of your body before it can be absorbed into your system and
cause you harm.
Part two of your
gut's job is to break down your foods, assimilate nutrients and
put them into your bloodstream so that ALL of your cells--from
the hairs on your head down to the tips of your toenails and
everything in between--can be nourished.
If your cells,
tissues and organs don't get the nutrients they need for a long
enough period of time, it's not "if" but simply "when" will you
develop a disease.
So what's going
on in there?
Now
that you have an idea about how important your gut is, the rest
of the story is:
1-
How does your gut get "sick" to begin with?
2-
What happens when it does?
and
3-
What can you do about it?
Although things like
medications (especially antacids and antibiotics), stress and
environmental toxins can harm your gut health, far and away the
biggest cause of a sick gut is poor digestion.
And that, my friend,
is a direct result of eating foods that your body can't
effectively break down.
When your foods are
not broken down sufficiently and are too big to be absorbed and
used by your body, two different "sick gut scenarios" can play
out:
1)
Food particles that are too big to pass through your gut wall
will continue down your intestinal tract and cause any number of
digestive issues.
AND/OR
2)
Food particles that ARE broken down enough to pass through the
gut wall but are STILL too big for your body to use will be
absorbed into the bloodstream and wreak havoc ALL OVER your
body.
Here's the low down
on both of those:
Sick Gut
Scenario #1:
When your foods are
poorly broken down and too big to pass through the gut wall,
they move down the GI tract and can cause gas, bloating,
diarrhea and constipation, and can eventually result in
conditions like IBS and diverticulosis.
But that's not all.
You see, the
undigested food particles also putrefy (rot) inside of you. As
they rot, the harmful bacteria in your gut feed on them,
multiply like rabbits, and can eventually outnumber your
friendly flora.
Plus, as your food is
rotting, chemicals are formed that are literally poisonous to
your body. These chemicals and the harmful bacteria that is now
swarming inside of you both eat away at your intestinal lining,
making it more and more porous, and eventually your gut can get
leaky.
When you have leaky
gut, toxins can seep into your lymphatic and systemic
circulation. From there the poisons target specific organs and
tissues, causing pain and inflammation and compromise their
functioning.
Sick Gut
Scenario #2:
Digestive remnants
that ARE broken down enough to be absorbed into your bloodstream
and lymphatic system (but are still too big to be used by your
body) are called "circulating immune complexes" (CICs).
These CICs are THE
leading cause of fibromyalgia and can impede healing, encourage
and worsen pain and inflammation and compromise your immune
system even more, making you susceptible to infections and
viruses of all kinds.
They can also been
seen as dangerous invaders by your immune system and lead to
food sensitivities.
How to avoid
these two scenarios
Clearly your gut is
where to begin when you're sick AND when you want to achieve
maximum health.
So it's essential to
make sure that yours is as healthy and strong as
possible--because your life could depend on it.
The good news is
that's easy to do...
It
just involves two simple steps:
1)
Structure your meals so that your body can easily break them
down like it should.
The Great Taste No
Pain health system will show you
exactly how to do this.
The manuals will show you
what to eat with what when you're eating more than one type
of food at a time. It's just a matter of knowing a few simple
principles.
You'll also get meal
suggestions and even a pocket-sized
card for dining out so all of your meals will be a breeze
for your digestive system.
Note: If you're gluten
sensitive, then Great Taste No Gluten is for you
instead.
2)
Ensure your intestinal flora are properly balanced.
The friendly bacteria
in your system help to keep the gut wall from leaking, as well
as assisting with digestion and keeping harmful bacteria under
control.
The ideal flora
balance is having at least 85% beneficial bacteria and no more
than 15% harmful.
The problem is,
thanks to modern diets and medications, most people have the
complete OPPOSITE of what they should have.
So it's absolutely
essential to give your gut a helping hand with a quality
probiotic supplement.
Like Super Shield
multi-strain probiotic formula.
Super Shield contains potent, effective strains of 13 friendly
bacteria that are ready to take their place along your
digestive tract. They'll help fend off the bad guys, keep your
digestion smooth, beef up your immune system and help make that
gut wall nice and strong.
Your gut is truly
your "gold" when it comes to overall health.
Take care of yours
and it will return the favor many times over.
To your health,
Sherry Brescia
